For centuries, people of African descent have been told that honoring their ancestors is evil. We’ve been warned against giving sacrifices and offerings, discouraged from lighting candles unto the dead, and told that speaking to our ancestors is demonic. But the truth is far more revealing, and it starts with understanding who benefits from keeping you disconnected from your lineage.
If you’ve felt called to explore your roots but second-guessed yourself, this message is for you.

The Real Reason Ancestor Veneration Was Feared
Honoring your ancestors isn’t new. It’s not radical. And it’s not wrong.
European and other global cultures have long practiced forms of ancestor veneration:
- Catholics light candles for the dead and pray to saints on All Souls’ Day.
- Asian families clean ancestral graves, offer food, and burn incense during festivals.
- Hindu traditions include offerings of fire and food to support loved ones in the afterlife.
So why is it that African traditions, especially those practiced in the Americas or rooted in Yoruba, Kongo, or Voodoo systems, were demonized?
Because they are powerful.
African forms of ancestor veneration were embodied. They included drumming, song, possession, and direct spiritual communication. These practices couldn’t be controlled or easily colonized. So Europeans reframed them as threatening.
It wasn’t just the rituals they feared. It was the remembrance. When you honor your ancestors, you remember who you are.
What It Really Means to Honor Your Ancestors
Let’s clear this up: Honoring your ancestors is not the same as worshiping them.
You’re not replacing the Creator or bowing to spirits you don’t understand. You’re reconnecting with the people who carried you here.
To honor your ancestors means:
- Showing gratitude for their sacrifices and survival
- Maintaining connection through prayer, memory, or simple offerings
- Walking in alignment with the legacy they left behind or the healing they call you to reconcile
- Breaking cycles that have passed through generations
You’re not doing something new. You’re returning to something ancient.
Why This Truth Was Hidden From You
Disconnection wasn’t an accident. It was by design.
When enslaved Africans were forced into new lands, they were stripped of language, culture, and connection. This made them easier to control. Any practice that reinforced identity, especially spiritual identity, had to be stamped out.
Therefore, ancestor veneration was rebranded as ‘witchcraft’, ‘juju’, or ‘black magic’. Drumming became “the devil’s music.” Altars were hidden or disguised as Catholic shrines.
Entire generations were taught to fear the very traditions that gave them power.
Signs You’re Being Called Back to This Path
You might not have grown up with altars or ancestral names. But if you feel something stirring inside, something pulling you toward the ancient ways, you’re being called.
You may be:
- Dreaming of ancestors or unknown people
- Longing for a connection you can’t explain
- Drawn to indigenous ways of life without knowing why
- Feeling uncomfortable in Abrahamic religions, even if you once embraced the
These are signs. And they’re valid. You’re not lost. You’re being guided.

You Were Never Meant to Forget
The most dangerous thing you were taught was that your history started with slavery. It didn’t.
Your story begins with brilliance, mathematics, medicine, philosophy, agriculture, and sacred knowledge passed through bloodlines.
When you light a candle or speak your ancestor’s name, you activate that lineage. You don’t summon spirits, you embody your power.
And you begin to walk with it again.
