Signs of Juju, Witchcraft, and Black Magic: How to Recognize Spiritual Attacks

Juju, witchcraft, and black magic are terms that often cause confusion, especially when compared with the structured ritual practices of Ifá. While outsiders sometimes use these words interchangeably, each has a unique cultural meaning, context, and history. What unites them is the belief that spiritual power can be used for manipulation, harm, or control. This post explains how these practices are defined. It also exposes how they differ from the balance-centered practices of Ifá and other African traditions.

What is Juju?

Juju is a West African term used to describe charms, objects, or medicines believed to hold spiritual power. These items are often employed for manipulation, harm, or other forms of evil intent. However, some distinguish ‘good’ vs. ‘bad’ juju, implying that the discrepancies in the purpose of such devices.

During the colonial period, outsiders reduced a wide range of African ritual practices into this single label. Unfortunately, this is why the word still embodies mixed associations today. While Juju is often portrayed negatively, in its cultural context, it reflects localized systems of power that remain active in many West African communities.

What is Witchcraft?

Witchcraft originally referred to European practices of spellwork, spirit pacts, or sorcery outside of the authority of the church. It was often linked with accusations of devil worship and was used as a justification for persecution, particularly of women. Over time, the word “witchcraft” became a blanket term for any practice viewed as hidden, manipulative, or threatening to established societal order.

During the colonial period, Europeans applied this label to African practices they did not understand, branding sacrifices, divination, and ritual medicine as “witchcraft.” This distortion still influences how outsiders view African traditions today, often leading to confusion between structured systems like Ifá and destructive practices that are more in line with the European idea of witchcraft.

In modern times, there are also organized movements such as Wicca that claim the word “witchcraft” in a positive sense. However, Wicca and similar Western practices differ from African traditions such as Ifá. These systems draw from European folklore, ceremonial magic, and modern pagan spirituality instead of African cosmology.

What is Black Magic?

Black magic is a European concept that describes rituals seen as dark, forbidden, or dangerous. It was used in the medieval and early modern periods to label practices outside the church’s control. Rituals performed by certain groups were often associated with sorcery, heresy, or dealings with spiritism. As time passed, the phrase became shorthand for any form of malicious or destructive ritual work.

During the colonial era, Europeans projected this term onto African practices they feared or misunderstood, branding sacrifices, charms, and divination as “black magic.” This mislabeling erased the distinction between traditions grounded in balance and those rooted in harmful practices designed for malevolent manipulation.

Today, the term continues to carry heavy negative connotations and is often used broadly to describe any ritual work intended to harm others. In contrast, Ifá does not view destructive practices as legitimate because they create imbalance that ultimately harms both the victim and perpetrator.

The Reality of Spiritual Attacks

Recognizing the impact of Juju, witchcraft, or black magic is important because their effects are not always obvious. Many people endure misfortune, illness, or blocked opportunities without realizing there may be a spiritual cause.

If these forces are left unchecked, they can create long-term patterns of hardship and struggle that affect every area of one’s life. Awareness is the first step toward seeking proper guidance and uncovering the remedies that bring balance and restoration.

Common Signs of Spiritual Attack

When someone is under the influence of Juju, witchcraft, or black magic, the effects rarely appear as a single event. Instead, they show up in repeated patterns that cut across health, finances, relationships, and various life circumstances. These patterns often leave people feeling overwhelmed or confused until they get to the root of the issues.

Here are a list of common signs that individuals often experience when under spiritual attack:

  • Unexplained illness that resists normal treatment: Persistent sickness, weakness, or pain that doctors cannot explain may point to spiritual interference.
  • Recurring nightmares or disturbing dreams: Dreams of being chased, tied down, attacked, or trapped often reflect negative forces working through the subconscious.
  • Unusual accidents or repeated bad luck happening in patterns: Constant slips, falls, or unexpected mishaps may indicate disruption of one’s spiritual path.
  • Domestic animals acting strangely or refusing to enter certain spaces: Pets and livestock often pick up on energy shifts that humans overlook.

Mental and Emotional Signs

  • Persistent feelings of fear, heaviness, or spiritual blockage: An unshakable sense of dread or weight suggests interference from external forces.
  • Loss of motivation, energy, or intuitive insight without reason: A sudden lack of drive or focus, especially when life circumstances don’t coincide with it, can reflect spiritual imbalance.
  • Hearing voices, whispers, or sensing oppressive unseen presences: Many describe this as feeling watched, followed, or manipulated by forces they cannot see.

Life Circumstance Signs

  • Sudden misfortune or financial loss without clear cause: Unexpected setbacks that repeat over time are often seen as a hallmark of spiritual attacks.
  • Strained relationships or constant conflict arising suddenly: Longstanding peace in a household or partnership breaking down without reason may point to outside interference.
  • Spiritual objects in your home or environment placed without your knowledge: Finding powders, bundles, or unfamiliar objects at your door or yard can be a direct sign of ritual work.
  • Blocked opportunities, where progress is always delayed or reversed unexpectedly: Promotions, deals, or life plans collapsing at the last moment may reflect spiritual obstruction.
In this short, Dr. Asanee discusses seven signs of spiritual attack and emphasizes the importance of spiritual investigation to differentiate them from natural causes.

Recognizing Spiritual Attacks

At Asanee 44, we often meet clients who have exhausted every practical solution, only to find that something deeper is at play. One woman shared that her thriving business suddenly collapsed within months. Loyal clients disappeared, unexpected debts piled up, and even her health began to decline.

Doctors couldn’t explain her constant fatigue, and every new opportunity she tried fell apart at the last minute. When we performed Ifá divination, it revealed that spell work had been done against her to block her progress. Through prescribed ebo (sacrifices) and akose (spiritual medicine) remedies, she was able to reset her energy and gradually rebuild her life.

If you’re noticing patterns that don’t add up, don’t ignore them. At Asanee 44, we offer Ifá divination and spiritual investigation services to uncover the truth so that balance can be restored to your life.

Common Questions About Withcraft

Are Juju, witchcraft, and black magic the same thing?

Not exactly. While outsiders often use these terms interchangeably, each has a specific cultural history. Juju refers to spiritual objects or charms in West African contexts. Witchcraft is a broader term for spiritual manipulation, often linked to folk traditions or accusations of hidden power. Black magic is typically a Western label for harmful, destructive uses of occult power. They overlap in practice, but the distinctions matter when understanding their cultural roots.

Can spiritual attacks really cause illness or misfortune?

Yes. In the Ifá worldview, spiritual energy directly influences health, relationships, finances, and other aspects of your destiny. Harmful forces can manifest as unexplained illness, financial hardship, or sudden life setbacks. At Asanee 44, we often see cases where Ifá divination reveals that persistent problems are not physical concerns, but are spiritually driven.

How do I know if I’m unlucky or under a curse?

Repeated patterns are the key indicator. Ordinary life challenges come and go, but a curse or attack shows up as consistent, unexplained disruptions. Examples include health issues that you can’t overcome, opportunities that collapse at the last moment, or relationships that break down suddenly. If these patterns persist, Ifá divination can confirm whether spiritual forces are involved.

Can the effects of black magic be undone?

Yes. Through Ifá divination and prescribed remedies, harmful energy can be reversed, neutralized, or redirected. The specific solution depends on the cause, but healing and restoration are possible. What matters most is not ignoring the signs, but taking the proper steps to find and implement the resolution.
