Ifá initiation is a deeply respected rite of passage within the Yoruba tradition. Known as Ìṣẹ́fá (partial initiation) or Ìtẹ́fá (full initiation), this process marks a significant turning point in a devotee’s relationship with their destiny. While the details vary by lineage or temple, the foundational stages are generally consistent across traditional practice.
During the full initiation process, an initiate typically undergoes seven steps. It usually lasts 3 to 10 days, but it can vary. Either way, this blessed experience serves as a pivotal moment for deep transformation. In this post, we explore what each stage entails for anyone who feels called to walk the path of Ifá.

Stage 1: Pre-Initiation Divination
The journey begins with an Ifá divination session to determine what is needed throughout the initiation process. It also assesses an individual’s readiness to initiate. This is a required step.
Sometimes this reading happens a few days before the rituals begin. At other times, it occurs on the first day of initiation. The reading reveals specific sacrifices, offerings, rituals, or protections required for the journey.
Stage 2: Preparation and Cleansing
Once the pre-initiation divination session is completed, the initiate enters a preparation phase. This includes spiritual baths with herbs, light fasting (typically lasting less than 6 hours), and refraining from certain behaviors.
Offerings may be required in advance, such as feeding Ori or honoring Egungun (ancestors). This process is also performed at this stage. During this phase, the individual is prepared mentally and physically for the process.
Stage 3: Sacred Isolation
At this point, the initiate enters a period of isolation. They are separated from the outside world to limit distractions and focus on their inner world. During this time, the initiate is guided by elders who share foundational knowledge about the Ifá tradition.
The initiate is often taken to a sacred grove or other spaces, such as rivers, for cleansing and ritual work. The isolation helps ground the initiate in awareness and allows time for reflection. This environment creates a container where the transformation begins to unfold.
Stage 4: Shrine Setup and Invocation
This stage involves a series of rituals that connect the initiate to the divine forces guiding their path. Shrines are built or consecrated at this time. Sacrifices and offerings are made to Orunmila, the ancestors, and other supporting Orishas. Songs, incantations, and prayers fill the space as Ifá practitioners perform the rites.
In many lineages, the initiate is taken to a river or natural site for ceremonial work. These rituals may include cleansing, offerings, and prayers that help prepare the initiate for the next steps.
Stage 5: Receiving the Permanent Odù
One of the most defining moments of the process is when the initiate receives their permanent Odu. This divinatory code reveals the person’s spiritual path, including strengths, weaknesses, taboos, and responsibilities.
The Odu indicates a person’s destiny and what they are called to do in this life. From this point forward, the initiate is expected to live in alignment with these revelations. This information guides every aspect of their life, from relationships to ritual obligations.
Stage 6: Ifá Naming
After receiving the Odu, the initiate is given a new name. This name represents a rebirth and a deeper identification with the Ifá tradition and the individual’s life path. The name is more than a title. It becomes part of the person’s identity and is used within their spiritual community.
Stage 7: Reentry and Responsibility
The final stage is a celebration where the initiate is welcomed back into the community. The initiate joins family, friends, and fellow devotees for a joyful gathering. This event includes singing, dancing, food, and prayers.
The initiate is publicly honored for completing the process and taking on their new responsibilities. It is a moment of recognition and affirmation, marking the end of one chapter and the beginning of another.
